who and what we teach
At COJA Music Academy, we teach bass guitar students ages 8 and up — from teens discovering the low end to adults who want to lock in with a drummer and drive a band. We cover a wide range of styles including Pop, Rock, Jazz, Blues, Funk, and more. Whatever gets you excited to play, we’ll build your lessons around it.
Our instructors are professionally trained, performing musicians actively gigging in the North Vancouver community. So you’re learning from someone who’s actually out there holding down the groove — not just teaching from a book.
As you progress, you’ll build a strong foundation in:
- Groove and timekeeping — the bass player’s superpower
- Reading tablature and music notation — practical tools for any style
- Proper technique and finger control — fingerstyle, pick, and slap

We recommend ages 8 and up. By that age, most kids have the hand size and finger strength to get the most out of their lessons.
Yes, you’ll need something to practice on. An affordable starter acoustic or electric guitar is perfectly fine to begin with.
Yes! We book two paid trial lessons to make sure the student and teacher are a good match. If everything’s going well, we sign up for the term of weekly lessons. Just let us know what days and times work best for you.
It depends on age and goals:
- 30 minutes — recommended for ages 8 to 10
- 45 minutes — recommended for ages 10 and up
- 60 minutes — great for students who want to dive deeper into multiple subjects
