Piano Lessons In North Vancvouer

Piano Lessons for All Ages

At COJA Music Academy, we believe music education should be as unique as the person holding the instrument. That’s why our approach to piano lessons in North Vancouver is student-led — blending what you want to play with the right technical and theoretical know-how, tailored to your learning style. Whether you’re 4 or 94, you’ll learn from professional, performing musicians who are actively making music in the community. We encourage you to experiment, try new things, and most importantly, make music with others. And when you’re ready to take it further, our Take The Stage program is the perfect next step — guiding you from the practice room into the recording studio and onto a live stage.

who and what we teach

At COJA Music Academy, we welcome students of all ages — from age 4 right through to adults picking up the piano for the first time or returning after years away. We teach a wide variety of styles including Pop, Jazz, Rock, Classical, Movie Music, and more. Whatever gets you excited to play, we’ll build your lessons around it.

As you progress, you’ll build a strong foundation in:

  • Reading music notation — understand the language of music
  • Chord chart reading — the skill every contemporary player needs
  • Proper technique and finger control — so you can play comfortably and expressively
  • Music theory — the “why” behind the notes
  • Sight reading and ear training — practical tools for any style

Piano is the ultimate foundational instrument. It’s a complete toolkit whether you want to play as a solo artist, accompany yourself as a singer-songwriter, or join a band or ensemble. And when you’re ready to take it further, our Take The Stage program moves you from the practice room into a real recording studio and onto a live stage.

Our Teaching Philosophy — What Makes Us Different?

We believe in a student-led approach. That means we start with what you love — your favourite songs, your musical goals, your curiosity — and build the right technical and theoretical foundation around it. Whether you want to play pop by ear, master classical technique, or write your own songs, we tailor every lesson to your learning style and pace.

We encourage our students to experiment, try new things, and explore all the different ways music can be part of their lives. There’s no one right way to play — and we think that’s a good thing.

What makes us special is our people. Every instructor at COJA is a professionally trained, performing musician who’s actively gigging and making music in the North Vancouver community. We’re not just teachers who happen to play piano, we’re musicians who happen to love teaching. That real-world experience comes through in every lesson, whether we’re breaking down a tricky chord progression or talking about what it’s like to play on a real stage.

And because we’re strong across so many styles, we can adapt easily to whatever direction you want to take. Love jazz? Let’s dive in. Obsessed with movie scores? Let’s learn that. Want to work on your own songs? Even better.

Most importantly, we encourage our students to make music with others. Whether it’s jamming with a friend, joining a small ensemble, or stepping into the Take The Stage program, we believe the best growth happens in community.

We welcome students ages 4 and up — as long as they’re able to focus for short periods of time. Every child is different, so we’re happy to chat about whether your little one is ready.

Yes, you’ll need some kind of piano to practice on at home. It doesn’t need to be full-sized or fully weighted — a keyboard or digital piano works great to start.

It depends on the age and goals of the student:

  • 30 minutes — recommended for students ages 4 to 10
