Drum Lessons In North Vancvouer
drum Lessons for kids, teens, and adults
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of locking into a groove. Whether you’re counting in your first song or locking in with a full band, the drums are where the energy starts. It’s physical, it’s instinctive, and it’s one of the most rewarding instruments you can learn. When you’re ready to take it further, our Take The Stage program moves you from the practice room into a real recording studio and onto a live stage.
who and what we teach
At COJA Music Academy, we teach drum students ages 4 and up — from little ones discovering their first beat to adults who want to finally sit behind a kit and let loose. We cover a wide range of styles including Pop, Rock, Jazz, Funk, Blues, and more. Whatever gets you excited to play, we’ll build your lessons around it.
Our instructors are professionally trained, performing musicians actively gigging in the North Vancouver community. So you’re learning from someone who’s actually out there keeping time — not just teaching from a book.
As you progress, you’ll build a strong foundation in:
- Rhythm and timekeeping — the drummer’s core skill
- Stick control and technique — proper grip, rudiments, and dynamics
- Reading drum notation — practical tools for any style
- Music theory for drummers — understanding song structure, dynamics, and fills
- Ear training and playing with others — essential for locking in with a band
Drums are the pulse of any band — the engine that drives the energy and keeps everyone in lockstep. Whether you want to lay down a solid backbeat, unleash creative fills, or anchor the rhythm section as the heartbeat of a group, it gives you everything you need. When you’re ready to take it further, our Take The Stage program moves you from the practice room into a real recording studio and onto a live stage.
Our Teaching Philosophy — What Makes Us Different?
We believe in a student-led approach. That means we start with what you love — your favourite songs, the beats that get you moving, your musical goals — and build the right technical and theoretical foundation around it. Whether you want to lock in a rock groove, master jazz brush technique, or write your own drum parts, we tailor every lesson to your learning style and pace.
We encourage our students to experiment, try new things, and explore all the different ways music can be part of their lives. There’s no one right way to play — and we think that’s a good thing.
What makes us special is our people. Every instructor at COJA is a professionally trained, performing musician who’s actively gigging and making music in the North Vancouver community. We’re not just teachers who happen to play drums — we’re musicians who happen to love teaching. That real-world experience comes through in every lesson, whether we’re breaking down a tricky fill or talking about what it’s like to lock in with a live band on stage.
And because we’re strong across so many styles, we can adapt easily to whatever direction you want to take. Love rock? Let’s turn it up. Obsessed with funk? Let’s get in the pocket. Want to work on your own songs? Even better.
Most importantly, we encourage our students to make music with others. Whether it’s jamming with a friend, joining a small ensemble, or stepping into the Take The Stage program, we believe the best growth happens in community.
