First steps in music
Music performance program: Age 4-9
Beginner, Intermediate
The First Steps in Music program is for kids 4-9. This program combines weekly music lessons (to develop foundations of music) with a group class focusing on music performance and group play. In the group class kids perform for each other, play some musical games, and then work on a group song that will be performed at the end of the semester at our recital. This class is intended to be a primer to our next program, Take the Stage, where we introduce kids to the recording studio and a full concert.

Take the Stage
Music performance program: Age 10+
Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
The Take The Stage program is for kids and adults 10+.This program Combines a weekly music lesson with a group class. The lessons are there to work on the foundations of music, and then the group class will work on performing and learning to play in a group. In each group class, the kids will perform for one another and then the teacher will help them rehearse and learn a song they will play together at our group night performance. At the end of each term, the student will rehearse with a proband, record in a studio, and perform on stage with the teacher’s band.

At CoJa Music Academy, our private music lessons provide a personalized, self-directed learning experience where students are empowered to choose the music and skills they want to explore. For those unsure of where to begin, our experienced teachers offer tailored recommendations to help spark inspiration. Once a student selects their preferred material, the instructor incorporates essential techniques and music theory to build a strong foundation, helping students master the music they love. The Small ensemble program is here to create unique opportunities for students to take their skills to the next level. Currently, the school has an adult music ensemble which rehearses weekly called. In the past, we have had teen bands, small vocal groups, etc. We look to match the needs of our students in the creation of these groups. Classic Rock Choir, Community Choir in North Vancouver
Age 18+
All Skill Levels, No Audition required.
Led by Keith Sinclair, the Classic Rock Choir meets weekly on Monday nights at St. Andrew’s United Church in North Vancouver. Whether you’re an experienced singer or a beginner looking to “try it out,” our community choir is the perfect place for you! Each semester, the Classic Rock Choir selects and rehearses a diverse range of classic rock songs, culminating in a fantastic semester-end concert.

Music Composition program
Ages 12+, Adults
Beginner, intermediate
Beginning January 2026, Taylor Meloche will lead the newest COJA program, the Singer-Songwriter Ensemble. Students will meet weekly to write, collaborate, and share original music. This class will mainly focus on lyric-based writing, but instrumental songwriters are encouraged to join. Whether you’ve written one song, a few lines of poetry or a hundred unfinished songs, this course will give you the opportunity to explore your songwriting potential to the fullest. We will learn how to use a multitude of writing techniques/styles, song forms, and how to arrange our songs for a band. At the end of the term, students will have the opportunity to record their music in a studio as well as perform on stage with their peers. Inquire about signing up for the New Year now!

Faq
It depends on age, experience level, and goals. If you’re brand new to music, First Steps in Music (ages 4 to 9) or private lessons are great starting points. If you’re ready to perform, Take The Stage (ages 10 and up) takes you from lessons to a recording studio and live stage. Looking to collaborate? Small Ensemble, Community Choir, or the Singer-Songwriter Ensemble might be your fit. Not sure? Reach out and we’ll help you decide.
Yes. Many students combine private lessons with a group class, ensemble, or choir. They complement each other well.
Not for most programs. First Steps in Music and private lessons are designed for beginners. Some programs like Small Ensemble or Take The Stage benefit from a bit of foundational experience, but we’ll help you figure out where you fit.
Yes. We do two paid trial lessons to make sure the student and teacher are a good match before committing to a term.
We teach students from age 4 all the way through adults. Each program has its own age range, so we can find the right fit for anyone.
Lesson lengths vary by program and age. We offer 30, 45, and 60 minute options depending on what works best for the student.
Not usually. About halfway through the term or after the first group class, you would register for the following term instead. This keeps the group dynamic stable and gives everyone time to build their ensemble together.
