Group Music Classes in North Vancvouer

Group Music Classes — Find Your Band

At COJA Music Academy, our group classes are designed for musicians who want to take their playing to the next level by making music with others. We take players who are ready to move beyond individual lessons and tailor-fit bands out of people who want to bring their group playing to the next level. Whether you’re a guitarist, singer, drummer, bassist, or keyboardist, we’ll find the right spot for you.

This is a weekly class where a professional instructor facilitates and guides the band ensemble, but the direction is also led by the band members themselves. You’re not just following a teacher’s plan — you’re collaborating, making creative decisions, and shaping the sound together with your bandmates. The instructor is there to help bring your ideas to life.

Currently we have two adult bands that are both accepting new members, and in the past we’ve run teen bands, vocal ensembles, and even drum lines.

Some of the things you’ll get to do in these classes include:

  • Songwriting and arranging as a group
  • Full band rehearsals with guided direction
  • Improvisation and jam sessions
  • Building a repertoire of songs you love
  • Performance practice to get you stage-ready

Whether you’re looking to join an existing group or you’ve got a crew ready to roll, we’ll help you find your people and make some noise.

Bands to join

Looking to join a band? Here are the two ensembles we’re currently placing musicians into:

Band 1: Repertoire Builders
This band is focused on building a solid setlist of songs together. Each term we pick three songs to prepare for a final concert, and as our repertoire grows, we’ll dip in and out of past material to keep things fresh. Some of the songs we’ve already played together include Comfortably NumbHeart of the Matter, and The Logical Song — but we’re always exploring new material as a group.

Currently the band has keyboards, guitar or bass, and drums locked in. We’re open to singers or other instrumentalists who want to join the mix.

Band 2: Classic Rock Duo Expands
This band started as a husband and wife duo — both on guitar and vocals — playing a host of classic rock songs like You’re So BadPink Houses, and Bohemian Like You. Now they’re ready to grow into a full band. We’re currently looking for drummers, bass players, or keyboard players to round out the sound.

faq

Any musician who’s ready to play with others. We typically recommend some foundational experience on your instrument first, but we’ll help you find the right fit regardless of your level.

Not in a traditional sense. We’ll chat with you about your experience, goals, and what instrument you play, then match you into a band that fits.

That’s actually how most people start! We tailor-fit bands out of individual musicians who want to play together. It’s a great way to meet other musicians in North Vancouver.

It depends on the group. Some bands are more focused on building repertoire, while others dive into songwriting and improvisation. Even if you are brand new we would still love to hear from you!

Depends on the group! Our current bands lean into classic rock (think Comfortably NumbPink HousesBohemian Like You), but we’re open to exploring all kinds of material as a group.

It varies. Our current ensembles range from duos expanding into full bands to groups with keys, guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. We build the lineup around who’s interested.

Get in touch anyway. We’ve run teen bands, vocal ensembles, and drum lines in the past. If there’s enough interest, we’ll start a new group.
